Our Perspective

A Perspective on the Bank’s History from our Chairman, President and CEO.

Putnam County Savings Bank was founded in 1871, in the General Store of Alexander Lobdell, across from the present railroad station in Brewster, New York. Though originally established to serve local farmers and townsfolk, PCSB grew as more people left New York City to make their homes and start businesses in the Lower Hudson Valley. When the Putnam Division of the Harlem Railroad was completed in 1880, the area truly blossomed and Putnam County Savings Bank became more than just a “local” institution. PCSB built a reputation as a bank that genuinely cared about its customers and the towns where they lived. We were also known as a vital partner for local retailers and businesses. That solid foundation fueled the decision to expand, starting with a new branch in Mahopac, followed by Somers and Pawling. Soon PCSB branches opened in Jefferson Valley, Kent and Fishkill, then Pawling Village and Yorktown Heights.

In 2013, PCSB expanded into Rockland County with a branch in New City. Then on April 10, 2015, PCSB acquired CMS Bank – adding five branches in Westchester County – and expanding its footprint into the southern region of the Hudson Valley. On August 16, 2015 Putnam County Savings Bank changed its name to PCSB Bank paying homage to its beginnings as a local community bank while initiating the start of a new chapter in its history. We also introduced a new logo, which features a tree as a symbol of growth, family and our roots in the communities we proudly serve.

On April 21, 2017 PCSB Bank converted from a New York Chartered Mutual Savings Bank to a New York Chartered Stock Savings Bank. As part of the conversion, the PCSB Community Foundation was formed to help support worthy causes throughout PCSB's Lower Hudson Valley footprint. On January 1, 2019 PCSB Bank announced that it will be operating as a commercial bank, which allows us to better serve many of the municipalities we currently do business with.

Today, we take tremendous pride in our commitment to Putnam, Dutchess, Westchester and Rockland Counties in the Lower Hudson Valley. PCSB Bank will always remain steadfastly true to our original charter as a bank for local businesses and hard-working families. Expanding our footprint allows us to provide our True Local, True Banking style of personalized service to even more Lower Hudson Valley families and businesses. This is the cornerstone of our business philosophy and will be evident in everything we do.

Sincerely,

Michael P. Goldrick
